Thanks for racing with us and for your comments. I will try to post and respond to them. See you in '09.

Comment: I definitely liked the course. The only problem I had was at the intersection of furnace road on my way out, having to slow down alot for bikers on the return who were turning L in front of me. I think that you could reverse the loop there and not have bikers crossing each other and even though there is that knoll turning off furnace road, it could be marked well and have attendants and bikers stay to the right and it would probably work pretty well. Great job on the race.

Response to Furnace Intersection:

I understand what you are saying about that intersection. We milled over it for a LONG time!! However to reverse it we not only deal with the knoll on Furnace where you would make a LEFT turn (crossing traffic) onto Ridge Road, you would have to make another LEFT turn onto Turkey Run Road, again crossing traffic. On coming traffic does not have much visibility there and we deemed it too dangerous. This would be the case again when you would have to make another LEFT from Turkey Run to get back to the Furnace/Dreisbach intersection.  The goal from a race director's perspective when designing a course is to minimize the number of LEFT turns. It is almost IMPOSSIBLE to eliminate all of them but reducing them is doable. We also tried to keep our course about 14 miles. Thanks for the input, we will work hard to reduce the confusion for next year.

comment: For next year it would be great if you have mile markers for the bike and run course.

I loved starting the swim in the shallow end of the pool.

Response: I will make a note of that for next year. I believe we did have them in '07 but lost sight of it in '08. Glad you liked the shallow end. I really don't know why we didn't do that from the beginning???!! Thanks!

I just wanted to tell you how nice the race was this weekend. Very well run and the volunteers were amazing. Thanks!

comment: Less tar & chip was great--first hill was a killer...it was well staffed with volunteers but I wish it had miles written on the road (unless I missed them after mile 2!!) Also not as much traffic it seemed. I do think it was harder than last year however due to the distance and grade of the inclines.

Response: We were very nervous that the townships would be out tar and chipping the day before our race. We notify all the townships/boroughs, etc about the race, but as you can imagine, they have a schedule they have to follow and we are not their main priority. We will work on the mile markers. The distance of our '08 course is the same as the '07 but yes, I think the inclines may be tougher.

Liked the course: Absolutely

comment: At the intersection of Dreisbach/New Berlin Mt./Etc... if those directing the cyclists through could coordinate their efforts. I was unsure of who they were waving through and had to lock up my brakes to avoid a serios collission. Not a complaint by any means, I had a great time. Just a scarey couple of seconds as I slid to a stop. Thanks for an awesome day and great job to all the fire/police/volunteers! It was great! See you next year, Mark Cox, Sunbury

course: Absolutely

comment: I do quite a few Tri's and have never been to one that was marked or did the volunteers tell us the way to go even close to how great of a job your people did. Big thanks for that. Nothing worse then training for an event and taking a wrong turn because it wasn't marked. Chaz Ross

course: Absolutely

comment: Thank you Tara and everyone that organized another successful race. I also would like to thank all the volunteers. Volunteers did a great job on the bike and run course telling the racers where to turn. Only suggestion is to address the intersection where the bikers meet the runners before the runners head to the grass loop/bridge. Becomes dangerous with racers coming from all direction + vehicle traffic. Look forward to next year!! -BW

My positive comments are that the race was overall well organized, and people were nice/helpful. It's really good to have professional timers working a race like this. And the swim went off well even though that's tricky to get just right. I like starting in the shallow end of the pool vs. the deep end like we had before.

The bike course in general was fine with a good mix of challenging sections. However, I think there were several intersections that were too unsafe. I literally had to lock up my rear wheel 3 times braking on the course coming into intersections, and saw a female rider go off the side of the road to miss an oncoming/crossing rider at an intersection. One of biggest complaints is that some volunteers did a poor job of directing us. I almost crashed coming into 15th at St Mary's because a volunteer first tried to wave me the wrong way, then another jumped up to get me to turn left. Dave Decoteau was there at that point, and I spoke to him after the race about the incident and he said they were having real trouble directing the bikers/runners at that intersection. I don't think most volunteers appreciate how much lead time the faster bikers need in order to set up for a turn and quickly make it thru, and some of them seemed to assume that we knew which way to turn. (please don't get the impression that I'm beating up on the volunteers; I know they give up their time, and I've volunteered at races and know you can't make everyone happy, and overall they were very helpful) In sum, I don't think you should have the race on the same bike course next year unless it's absolutely your only choice.

I also spoke with several racers who said they were not directed very well when running thru the gravel parking lot approaching the bridge to the little pond. I also had a minor misdirection problem there.

Again, the volunteers should be told to assume that we can't see the arrows on the ground, and need more help getting where we need to go there.

Another minor point; I think as the race gets bigger you should give awards for the top 3 overall finishers, but not duplicate awards with the age groups (most races would not do this). The guys who get in the top 3 don't need another age group award, but there are lots of people who do one race a year and would really feel good about getting a third place trophy, but they miss out if one of the top 3 took first in their age group.

thanks, and hope to see you next year.

Response: Sorry to hear about having to lock your brakes...we really struggled with the bike course and all the intersections.  We knew of the cross traffic and tried to get the word out and publish the course, mention it in the meeting ect., but I understand it is different when you are actually racing. The hard part is that there are only so many roads we feel are safe to use for our event. We came up with at least 4 different versions of the course before we finally settled on this one. Most responders like the course, so I think we will keep it. We will just have to get more volunteers at those critical locations. Thanks for the input...I think I said it before, but it is always good to get an idea of the event from the racers perspective. As far as awards....good suggestion, can't guarantee we can do it based on money, but I hear where you are coming from. See you in '09.

course: Somewhat

comment: Didn't like turning into other bikers off Furnace road. Very dangerous.

Two thoughts:

Some people thought the green arrows in the green grass made the running in the park confusing.

Mile markers on the run would be nice.

Most of all, thank you so much for giving us such a nice event.
